Osage Orange Lumber

The American Osage Orange is a lighter color of Orange than the darker Argentine type. It has a brighter yellow appearance which oxidizes to a dark brown.

Osage Orange can be quite difficult to work with due to its density, and it is the strongest domestic hardwood species, as ranked by the Janka Scale. In fact, it is so durable that Osage Orange is often used in bow construction, and we have even seen some builders in East Texas use it to make foundations for homes!

Typically, Osage Orange comes in live edge slab or cookie forms, but it can be cut in to dimensional lumber. Dimensional Osage Orange costs more per board foot that it does in the slab or cookie forms, to compensate for the loss of usable lumber, and for the labor and tools it takes to further mill down the lumber in to dimensional boards.

Do be prepared to sharpen and/or replace any blades when working with this species.

Osage Orange can be an excellent substitute for Yellow Heart, if you're in a pinch.

All our dimensional lumber is milled S3S, and the price listed below is the per-board-foot price.
